Everytime you turn on the tv you are irritated with commercials, but somehow they seem to catch your eye. Media has really began to effect our economy, it's everywhere we go including: billboards, magazines and newspapers. These are in every aspect of our lives and it continues to influence how we think. People's opinions is what really matters of what "popular" is in todays society. Everybodys always looking for the new next thing. Diversity seems to be rare today in this world, "we've gone from living in a natural world to living in a manufactured one." Living in the postmodern world has changed the outlook on life. We are suppose to be a civilized country, but everything seems homosized now a days and there are no individualized personalities.
An sample of "It's gotta be the cheese" it states that we are wrapped in plastic, meaning we are "wrapped" together in a "plastic" or in other words fake society. Also in Culture Jam, in the ecology of the mind section it states we are annoyingly self-aborbed hypocrites, because we say we want to be different and individual but in reality we are all the same. Have you ever stopped and wondered what this world would be like if popularity never existed? If the economy wasn't in control, what would influence our opinions? We no longer think for ourselves, the media thinks for us. The environment we're surrounded by mentally effects us. The economy proves to show health effects for poor people can only afford the dollar menu verses health vegtables at weis. These meassages we are being sent are absurd and citizens should take a stand for we are suppose to be treated equal right? but now we strive to simply fit in with eveyone else.
This was a very good response i liked how you incorporated quotes and examples from both the readings and i also agree on the popularity issue people honestly do stuff just to fit in anymore. no body really does try to be a individual and think outside the box and i think you made that clear in your blog.
ReplyDeleteP.S. i think im probably the only person that will understand buying vegtables at weis. but good stuff carly
What would our society look like if we could roll up to McDonalds drive-through window and order vegetables from the dollar menu?
ReplyDeleteI like how you pointed out that we say we want to be different, but in the long run, we are all the same. Media absolutely would run our lives if there were not influencing factors that you pointed out. It is sad if you truly think about it, what kind of socienty do we live in that even as adults we are influenced severely by media and pop culture.
ReplyDeleteI think being "popular" or not is a serious problem today. Students feel the need to be cool and have the best clothes starting in junior high. These stays in effect all the way through college and even further in life. Its sad that we are this way. I think you had a wonderful post :)
ReplyDeleteI like that you pointed out that everyone wants to be individual, yet fit into the mold society has made for us. This doesn’t make sense! I think that it is ‘in’ to stand for individuality – which is the root of the problem. If people really believed in being individual, they would feel comfortable enough to be unique without having to point out the fact that individuality is ‘in’! This is totally hypocritical. In today’s society, how hard is it to really be individual? There are beliefs that turn into ‘fads’ that cover almost every category of life. There are environmentalists, techies, feminists, and the list goes on… but how can we tell who really believes in the cause from those who jump on the bandwagon?
