Blog #3

I believe that indentities we have "virtually" do have a significant meaning for some people. Some people allow themselves to get so wrapped up in the virtual world they forget about their lives and whats really important in the real world. Many of the gamers feel like they can be a completely different person in the virtual world and no one will judge them. They look good, have friends and can be something that they can never be in real life. For example people in the film actually formed relationships out of playing the game. Someone who fell in love with their personality, looks and charm in the virtual world without even truely knowing who they are. I personally feel like that is just plain creepy, but for some people gaming is their life and shows their true personality. The media puts in our head what they think we should look and act like, not who we really are. Although some of these people do have an addiction, they also have the choice to stop and change it.
Lasn believes that our emotions have become emtoicans. I'm not sure if i completely agree because you can feel a certain way but an emoticon can be seen in a different way in someone else's eyes. But also if you didn't feel a certain way why would you put the "emoticon" in someone's head that you are for example sad. I think it really depends on how into the virtaul world and the media someone really is. I just hope our economy starts to realize how the media is really effecting people's lives and people don't let it take over completely.

  1. One of the statements that you made in this blog sort of pointed something out to me. You said (about gaming) "They [players] look good, have friends and can be something that they can never be in real life." I think that it is simply EASIER to look good, make friends, and be a 'better' person in the fantasy worlds of gaming. People can gain more confidence while in the comfort of gaming, where they can manipulate everything that happens. But in the real world, there is vulnerability to failure and insecurity, and it's harder for people to gain that sense of comfort in a world that they cannot control. Gaming gives people a 'shot'of the success that we hunger for, but sooner or later, they come back to the 'real world' and realize that they haven't accomplished anything that holds any real world value.

  3. I agree that this world allows to people be who they want to be. And I believe that this is ok. Its what they want to do. I also agree that emoticons are not necessarily a bad thing. You only put the emoticons when you feel an emotion not just to get attention or what not.

  4. I completely agree that a lot of gamers play the games due to a fear of judgment in the real world. Whether it is their lifestyle, looks or even inabilities. I also feel that it is great that people can build relationships by using their true love, video games. who am i to judge how people fall in love?
